People are Our Principal Asset

Wide range of opportunities

The Salym Project with a total investment of around $1.5 billion is one of the largest projects with foreign capital in the Russian energy sector. However, a successful project is dependant on another very important element, namely the people who work on the project’s realisation.

SPD is a joint venture employing both Russian specialists, specialists from Shell and other foreign companies. The use of foreign management and technical specialists, especially during the early stages of the Salym project enabled SPD to implement the advanced standards and methods practiced by Shell and the worldwide oil industry in such important areas as HSSE, sustainable development, and state-of-the-art technologies.

Simultaneously, SPD trained and promoted Russian personnel. The Salym project offers a wide range of opportunities for career growth and the development of professional knowledge and skills in the areas of engineering design, new oil production technologies, finance, business organization and management. By 2008 96% of SPD staff were Russians citizens, many of who occupy senior positions in the Company’s management as well.

“As of mid 2010 about 850 employees represent the company staff,” - says HR Manager Marina Kudriavtseva. – “While at the stage of the company's active growth the priority for HR was focused on recruiting new hires, and now that the Salym project has entered the stage of sustainable development, more emphasis will be placed on preserving and promoting skilled professionals.

We believe that people are our principal asset; therefore we value our employees and help them reveal their best professional qualities and abilities. A system of material and moral incentives implemented by SPD is aimed at stimulating a creative approach to work and the quest for new non-standard solutions. The Company pays annual bonuses in accordance with the employee's personal work results and the overall achievements of the company. In addition, the Company offers material incentives for any substantial contribution to the implementation of the project.”

Training and refresher courses

One important functional area for HR is employee training and refresher courses. “A cornerstone of this process is the system of professional criteria (competence),” - says HR Advisor Irina Proskurkina. – “This means that any training or development plan for an employee is directly linked to his work and based on specific job requirements. A Shell Competence Framework accepted by the Group contains these requirements.

We also use a global structural approach to specialist training developed by Shell, i.e. 'learning ladders', which specify the training required or recommended for each stage of career promotion. SPD uses these 'learning ladders' in line with Russian HSSE requirements and standards.

SPD is also making considerable effort to use other Shell training methods. For instance, in 2005, the Moscow and Tyumen corporate offices provided training in negotiation for employees from Contract and Procurement. In March 2006, a training exercise was organised for the second time for HSSE department employees to analyse occupational accidents using Tripod Beta software.

The Company is going all out to take advantage of the new trends in training. This includes so-called 'on-the-job training', which involves training based on practical experience where theory goes along with practice. This type of training was organized in July 2006 for young specialists from the SPD Subsurface Field Team. An expert from HRH Geology (UK) spent 3 weeks at the well pads sharing practical skills and knowledge with SPD geologists. Future plans provide for the secondment of young drilling engineers to drilling rigs operated by an SPD contractor to gain practical experience as assistant drillers. This type of experience is very important to drilling engineers.

SPD has established cooperation with a number of training centers and companies providing personnel training services in Moscow, Tyumen and Nefteyugansk. In particular, based on agreement reached with the training center with the Gubkin Oil and Gas University in Moscow a 3-day training course 'Fundamentals of Petroleum Production', for people with no prior experience in the oil business, is held annually.

Company employees also have an opportunity to learn English in the Moscow office and in the field. For SPD expatriate personnel training classes in Russian are also organised.”

SPD seek to engage educated and talented individuals with the desire to grow professionally and realise their potential in a way beneficial to themselves, and to the company. SPD in turn, continuously strives, to offer employment conditions that are competitive on the labour market, and attract people with new opportunities and challenges of the Salym project.

SPD has developed an oil and gas production operator training program for young people from Salym and neighbouring areas. In the spring of 2006, this training program reached its first milestone, with the graduation of the first 19 students. During the year, the students, who had been selected on a competitive basis, learned the theory of oil and gas production at the training center in Pyt Yakh and received on-the-job training at the production facilities of the Salym project. SPD financed all training costs and paid educational allowance to the students. Upon completion of the course, the graduates received state certificates, which will allow them to work in their new specialty at oil and gas production companies of Russia. The 10 best students were offered jobs in SPD, and have already joined the Company.

On rotational schedule

More than 600 SPD employees work directly in the Salym fields, mainly on a rotational schedule. The rotational staff come to work in SPD Salym field from various regions of Siberia, the Far East, from Moscow and other cities of the European part of Russia as well as from abroad (foreign specialists). The duration of a shift is 2 to 4 weeks. Working in a remote location, in a harsh climate, a long way from home, especially for those with families, creates additional stress and can have an impact on people's health.

This is why SPD pays considerable attention to improving the living conditions for their personnel on shift rotation. Early 2005 a new two-storey accommodation building for 80 residents was completed, in addition to the already installed accommodation modules in the Upper Salym (East) base camp. The new accommodation has 32 double rooms and 16 single. Each pair of rooms is equipped with a shower, toilet and a washbasin. All rooms are connected to Shell’s corporate Intranet and Internet, which enables people to know what is going on in Russia and elsewhere in the world.

On the ground floor of the building, there is a gym, two recreation rooms, one of them has equipment to watch satellite TV, and the other one serves as a home cinema. Also on the ground floor, there is a room fitted with personal lockers to store and dry coveralls and jackets. Laundry services are provided for the employees to wash their clothes that are returned on the same day. A warm corridor connects the accommodation building with a cafeteria for 160 persons. All rooms are air-conditioned.

A similar project of a big accommodation camp with appropriate utility infrastructure was completed on the CPF site in West Salym.

SPD excels in its high level corporate culture, which is marked by team spirit and commitment to solve common tasks, respectful attitude towards people, democratic management style, transparency and accessibility to information. Corporate management meetings with the staff are held on a regular basis where employees are informed about achievements, current priorities and future objectives and company development, and are given the opportunity to ask manager’s questions and for manager’s to provide direct and straightforward answers.
