Road Safety Comes First |
Development of oilfields, especially at the stage of field infrastructure facilities construction, involves massive use of automobile transport. In 2005, for instance, the total mileage at the Salym fields exceeded 27 million km, which equals 675 circles around the Earth along the equator.
Therefore road safety is a crucial element of the labour safety and security measures implemented by SPD for its own and contractor personnel. The company has developed a Land Transport Master Plan, which identifies the tasks of the company in this area. The Master Plan is broken down into Safety Road Maps, which determine what issues will be taken on in the next three, six or twelve months, when they are expected to be closed out, and what are the reporting requirements.
As part of its routine road safety measures, the company provides safety training for drivers and passengers, regularly assesses road conditions and signs, checks compliance with traffic rules, and adds safety features to its vehicles.
In particular, the Company has introduced its own Defensive Driving Course for all SPD professional and non-professional drivers. The course covers driving skills and techniques to reduce the frequency of road incidents and enhance road safety. All light vehicles and crew buses should have seatbelts, and the seatbelt rules have been enforced.
SPD infield maximum speed limit is 40 km per hour. The speed limit on the federal highway is 80 km per hour and for heavy vehicles, 60 km per hour. SPD has road monitoring teams that ensure road safety in the oilfield roads 24 hours a day. |
